Keith Freedman for Mayor of San Francisco

Restoring San Francisco’s Reputation
as a Hub of Innovation and Opportunity

The economic challenges facing San Francisco are multifaceted, stemming from a combination of factors that have strained our city’s financial well-being. As we navigate through these complexities, it’s crucial to acknowledge the root causes that have led to our current predicament. The escalating cost of living and conducting business in San Francisco has created a scenario where individuals and businesses alike are seeking more affordable options elsewhere. This trend not only erodes our workforce but also diminishes our economic vitality, leading to a concerning projected budget deficit that threatens essential public services.

In response to these pressing issues, my administration is committed to implementing a comprehensive economic revitalization strategy. Central to this strategy are initiatives aimed at incentivizing businesses to thrive in our city. Through targeted tax incentives and regulatory reforms, we will create a conducive environment that attracts and retains businesses, fostering job creation and innovation across various sectors. Moreover, our focus on promoting affordable housing is integral to stabilizing our local workforce, ensuring that residents can afford to live and contribute to San Francisco’s economic vibrancy.

Enhancing public and commercial spaces is another cornerstone of our revitalization efforts. By investing in the revitalization of key areas, we aim to create attractive, functional spaces that draw tourists, support retail activity, and cultivate a sense of community. These enhancements not only improve the overall quality of life for residents but also position San Francisco as a premier destination for investment and tourism, reinforcing our status as a global city of opportunity and innovation.

Furthermore, our commitment to fiscal responsibility is paramount. We will conduct a thorough audit of all city departments to identify and eliminate wasteful spending, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently and effectively. Additionally, we will explore innovative fiscal policies such as public-private partnerships to drive revenue and revitalize our downtown area, fostering economic growth and sustainability.

By taking decisive and proactive measures, we will reverse the current economic trends, mitigate budget deficits, and restore San Francisco’s reputation as a leading global city, teeming with opportunities for prosperity and innovation.

Supporting San Francisco’s Retailers and Consumers

The economic report from January 2024 offers valuable insights into the current state of affairs in our city. It’s evident from the report that while SFO traffic has rebounded to pre-pandemic levels, hotel occupancy remains below par by 15-20%. This discrepancy suggests a shift in travel patterns, with San Franciscans possibly venturing out more or visitors bypassing stays in the city. While this increased travel is a positive indicator of financial stability for residents, it also signifies a loss in potential revenue that could have benefited our local economy.

Mayor Breed’s proposal to address declining retail by building a soccer stadium raises questions about prioritizing revenue-generating retail spaces versus event-centric venues. While supporting a soccer team is commendable, repurposing retail areas into seasonal event spaces may not address the underlying issues driving retail downturns. Retail is not obsolete; San Francisco’s shopping centers like the San Francisco Shopping Center and Union Square cater to a diverse audience, including locals, tourists, and day-trippers. Cities like San Jose have seen success in revitalizing retail and tourism, indicating that the industry’s decline is not inherent but linked to broader issues like homelessness and safety concerns.

Although some sectors of our economy remain robust, it’s crucial to recognize the hidden impacts on job losses and business closures, particularly in Accommodations/Food Service and Retail Trade. The unemployment rate may not fully capture the extent of job losses, especially for lower-paying workers commuting to San Francisco.

To ensure a prosperous future for San Francisco, we must address core challenges like homelessness, open-air drug activities, and revitalizing our retail hubs. By creating safer, more inviting spaces, we can attract visitors and residents alike, reinvigorating our economy and supporting local businesses. It’s time to rebuild and re-imagine our city as a vibrant, thriving hub for commerce, culture, and community.
