Keith Freedman for Mayor of San Francisco

Building a Smarter, Inclusive San Francisco

During the pandemic, the recall of our Board of Education was prompted by their misplaced priorities, such as engaging in discussions about school names rather than providing vital support to parents navigating the complexities of remote learning while juggling their own work-from-home challenges. This lack of focus on essential educational needs during a crisis period underscored the urgent need for realignment and student-centered decision-making.

Furthermore, the Board’s stance on removing successful charter schools highlighted a stagnant approach that appeared to prioritize equity measures at the expense of student advancement. While equity in education is crucial, it should not come at the cost of limiting educational opportunities for students who thrive in alternative learning environments offered by charter schools.

The recent ballot measure addressing the teaching of algebra in 8th grade brought to light the importance of making decisions that prioritize student readiness and provide flexible pathways for academic growth. It emphasized the necessity for our education system to adapt to the diverse needs of students, ensuring that those who are prepared for advanced subjects like algebra can access appropriate coursework.

To truly foster a smarter San Francisco, our schools must effectively serve all students, regardless of their backgrounds or learning preferences. This means striving for high success rates across all schools and ensuring that educational opportunities are accessible to every student, not just a select few. Expanding programs like the “Free City College” initiative to encompass a broader spectrum of courses, including continuing education and life fulfillment classes, would significantly contribute to enhancing inclusivity and community enrichment. By aligning our educational strategies with the values of accessibility, adaptability, and student-centeredness, we can create a more vibrant and equitable educational landscape for the entire San Francisco community.
